HERE BE DRAGONS is an artistic research project by artist Nevet Yitzhak. The project‘s name is an English translation of the Latin phrase HIC SUNT DRACONES used by premedieval cartographers alternately with HIC SUNT LEONES (Here Be Lions) or illustrations of terrible monsters, to mark uncharted territories in their maps. In effect, this phrase marked the borders of the world known at the time to Westerners, indicating the ends of knowledge, and the beginning of the unknown. Being unknown, these regions were proclaimed dangerous, and thus, were infused with fantasy and dread.
